In 1997, the Town of Beacon Falls authorized the formation of a Dissolution Study committee as defined in section 10-63a to 10-63-f of the Connecticut General statutes. This committee, composed of members of both towns, and representatives of the State Board of Education, are required to prepare a dissolution report, recommending or not recommending dissolution of the region, detailing the transfer of assets to the respective towns, and plans for continuation of education for the students in the towns. Preparation of this report is expected to be complete in the second half of 1998.
This report is submitted the State Board of Education, who will either approve it or recommend changes.
Once the report is approved, a referendum is scheduled in each town. If the referendum is approved by majority vote in Prospect, and majority vote in Beacon Falls, the Regional School district is dissolved.
The committee has begun its meetings and hired an appraiser.
New legislation, introduced by Beacon Falls legislators, and passed by the state legislature, gives special powers to either town, in this district only, to vote to dissolve the region without approval of the other town.
The Dissolution Committee completed its work in August of 1998, recommending that the Region not be dissolved.
